How is the trains in Cambodia? After 15 years, trains are allowed to run in Cambodia again. Trains always have its own special points that many travelers like taking a train.

Because it has just been opened again, there are still some limitations in destinations. Currently, Cambodia railways only serve journeys to four destinations including Phnom Penh, Takeo, Kampot and Sihanoukville.

Why choose the train?

There are several reasons why you should choose travelling by train. First, it is not always easy to get out of Phnom Penh and cities in Cambodia because of the high volume of traffic. Secondly, you can easily get to Phnom Penh train station because it is located in the center. Thirdly, it is faster to travel by train than by buses or taxis.

Another reason is that trains are always punctual. In Cambodia, buses often take time to pick up passengers and stop a lot to drop off luggage. However, the train is direct so you will not be late. Moreover, it is safe to travel by train compared to other means of transportation. And you can take your own motorbikes or bicycles with you on the train. The fee is $2 for a bicycle, $5 for motorbike and $12 for a car.

How to take a train in Cambodia?

There are two trains: the Yellow Train and the Blue Train. Both of them has air-conditioner and the ticket price is the same. The slight difference is that the Yellow Train has sideway seating set up but the Blue Train is front-facing. Generally, the experience may be better than you expect. The ride is quite smooth and the seats are upholstered. Besides, the toilet is also clean.

You do not need to worry about language since the man wearing a high-vis jacket will make announcements by both Khmer and English. Before you get on the trains, you can buy some food and drink at the station stops which offer boiled eggs, dried fish, pineapple, mango and iced coffee. When you are on the train, an assistant serves you with instant noodles and bottled water.

Tickets and Timetable

You can buy a train ticket at the ticket office inside the stations in Sihanoukville, Kampot and Takeo. It is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm in working days and from 6 am to 12 pm in the weekend. For Saturday and Sunday journeys and in public holidays, it is better to buy the ticket in advance because the train is very busy in these days.
